During 2009 the increased availability of specialized criminal toolkits for spammers and malware writers has made it easier than ever before to create, distribute and use spam and malware. This has lead to an increases of about 23%* of malware variants year-on-year.
Symantec reported stopping more than 21 million different types of spam campaigns in 2009, more than twice the amount seen in 2008.
Botnets currently have control of up to five million computers and 2009 was the year that the threat landscape sharpened its skills, rather than just relying on large spam runs and malware attacks. More variants were intercepted with increased sophistication and efficiency as well as improvements in their technology. With botnets predicted as becoming autonomous and intelligent over 2010, capable of extending their own survival.
One sophisticated botnet alone, known as Cut wail, was responsible for 8.5 trillion spam emails between April and November, that’s 29% of all spam.
